Have you ever had feelings of anger that were overshadowed by laughter? Like when you’re trying to be angry at someone and you just can’t because they’re making you laugh. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine.” It is no secret that happiness and laughter can change an attitude. Yet, many of us never consider just how much good happiness can do. We focus on the mental changes that can result from cheerfulness, but the UN has taken it even further, stating that happiness can affect every aspect of life.

A person’s well-being is responsible for how they interact with the world. If someone is happier, they will prosper physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, politically. The UN believes this so strongly that they have dubbed March 20, today, International Day of Happiness. All around the world people are celebrating happiness and sharing a common bond of laughter and joy. This is for the betterment of all humanity.

There are websites constructed to tie people of all nations together in their celebration of happiness. If you were to simply google “International Day of Happiness,” there would be many sites that show up. Among them are International Day of Happiness, #happyacts, and Happy Party. On such sites you will find an explanation of what the Day of Happiness is and why it was established, as well as different ways to celebrate. The global happy party is a collection of pictures of people around the world dancing to Pharrell William’s Happy.  You can join the party by clicking on the link and uploading your own pictures to the party.

The Happy Acts campaign is a challenge to which the world has been invited. The challenge is to do and share as many #happyacts as possible by March 20. For each person that accepts the #happyacts challenge, $1 is donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Taking part in this furthers the happiness in a “pay it forward” type of attitude.

There are many different ways to celebrate the International Day of Happiness. I encourage you to take part. Whether it’s joining the above mentioned celebrations or starting your own. It could be something simple like treating yourself to a coffee or an ice cream. It could be something bigger like getting a group of people together for a hang out. Whatever you choose to do, do something that brings joy and happiness to you and those around you!
